Superman

If you’ve been looking for a drink that will make you feel like a superhero, this is it. A drink to make you think you can leap tall buildings in a single bound (or at least lawn furniture). You’ll be partying at speeds faster than a speeding bullet and do push ups to show you’re more powerful than a locomotive.

Sangria

Sangria is about the only way you can get me to drink red wine. I’m just not into it. Add enough fruit and sugar and then I’m all over it. This recipe is bursting with fruity goodness along with a healthy dose of rum. Enough rum to cover up the red wine taste. Perfect for lazy summer days spent doing nothing while the kids play evenings with your spouse after the kids are in bed. Right. That’s the only time I drink it. I have made this with regular white rum as well as spiced rum. Both are delicious. Enjoy!

Sangria

  • 1 lemon
  • 1 lime
  • 1 orange
  • 1 1/2 cups rum
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 (750 milliliter) bottle dry red wine
  • 1 cup orange juice

Directions

  1. Have the fruit, rum, wine, and orange juice well chilled. Slice the lemon, lime and orange into thin rounds and place in a large glass pitcher. Pour in the rum and sugar. Chill in refrigerator for 2 hours (or overnight) to develop the flavors.
  2. When ready to serve, crush the fruit lightly with a wooden spoon and stir in the wine and orange juice. Adjust sweetness to taste.

The Daiquiri

Happy Friday! Start the weekend off right with a daiquiri. No blender needed for this perfect cocktail. Created in 1898 by an American engineer working at the Daiquiri copper mines near Santiago de Cuba, this drink will knock you silly and make you ask for another immediately after you come to. Plenty of rum, and not much else! Enjoy!

The Daiquiri
(makes 1 cocktail)
3 parts Bacardi
1 part fresh lime juice
1 part simple syrup (equal parts water & sugar combined until sugar is dissolved)

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously until chilled and strain into a chilled glass.

Strawberry Lemon Drop

In one of my more boneheaded moves EVER, I gave up alcohol for Lent this year. I’m not Catholic, but I like the tradition of sacrificing something I enjoy for 40 days in an effort to refocus my attention on the things that really matter. I didn’t think thru that I’d be giving up a beer on St. Patrick’s Day, girls night out cocktails and martinis with my hubby after a particularly trying day. I guess that means it was a successful experience since I really felt the pain of the loss. Actually, this blog is the product of Lent. A couple years ago I decided to give up Facebook for Lent. After about 3 days, I was so deprived for online community that I started Bakerlady. I kind of missed the spirit of sacrifice that year. I stuck to the “wagon” much better with alcohol. Today was the end of my deprivation and I celebrated by making one of my all time favorite drinks. Of course I have to share my joy (hic-up!) with all of you! [Read more…]
