Wassail

A trick-or-treating tradition in our family is to have a mug of this spicy pungent warm-you-to-the-bones liquid upon returning from gathering candy. Also made tonight – Mom’s Tortellini Soup, Applesauce Drop Doughnuts, Simple Caramel Apples and Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting.

Wassail

Wassail

2 quarts apple cider
2 cups orange juice
1/3 cup lemon juice
12 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
1 pinch ground ginger
1 pinch ground nutmeg

Directions

  1. In a slow-cooker or a large pot over low heat, combine apple cider, orange juice and lemon juice. Season with cloves*, ginger and nutmeg. Bring to a simmer. If using a slow cooker, allow to simmer all day. Serve hot.

*I like to stud a couple orange slices with the whole cloves and float them in the wassail as it’s heating in the crock pot. I think it makes it very festive and pretty. Simply take a whole orange and cut small holes (slits) with the very tip of a paring knife around the outside of the orange. Then press individual cloves into the orange and slice.
