Powerful Pomtini

This is my current absolute favorite drink. I love it. During all the parties of the holidays I made giant batches of it and brought it with me everywhere. It’s potent and perfectly pom-licious. I warn you though – I’ve seen 6′ 4″ men succumb to the power of these “tinis”. They think it’s a girly drink and they’ll have no problem plowing thru a couple. They are wrong. As my husband recently said “Honey, if bars made ‘girly drinks’ the way you make them, all men would drink girly drinks at bars”. It’s true.

Make sure you use the real pomegranate juice (pictured) if you can. It makes all the difference in the world. And, you get antioxidant super juice with your alcohol! You can substitute triple sec for the Cointreau if you want, but a) it will be less powerful and b) it won’t be nearly as smooth and delicious. I don’t like my drinks sweet really – and the triple sec just makes it a little sugary for my tastes. Enjoy!

Powerful Pomtini

2 parts vodka
2 parts pomegranate juice
1 part Cointreau

Combine all ingredients in a shaker full of ice. Shake vigorously 30 times. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lime if desired.

For those of you unfamiliar with the 1 part/2 parts recipe format — this means if you’re making 1 drink, do 2 ounces vodka & pom and 1 ounce Cointreau. If you’re making a batch, do 2 cups vodka & pom and 1 cup Cointreau.

Fabulously Freaky Halloween Fodder

I love throwing Halloween parties. Mostly because I get to make delicious food and give it disgusting names. Here’s a round-up of all the deliciousness I made this year and the nastiness I called it. Most of these items are easy to make (and can be done ahead of time) so you won’t be slaving away in the kitchen while your guests are having a goulishly good time! My hot hubby and I dressed up as Johnny and June Cash this year. We had a blast!

Lemon Drop Martini

A good lemon drop martini is a perfect balance of tart and sweet. It should have enough vodka to give it a slightly dry martini feel in your mouth, but enough juice and sweetness to be utterly refreshing. This is my version. I think it’s pretty much perfect.

Clear Cosmos

I really enjoy making drinks with my own spin on them. I also love anything I can make in a giant batch and bring to a party. I have a to-go container with a lid that I bring along with me to add a little cheer wherever I’m going. It holds almost a gallon of happy. This is one of my favorite beverages to liven up a get-together. And, since it’s clear, I don’t have to concern myself that someone might spill and ruin carpet or upholstery. Aren’t I a considerate guest?

Pirate’s Punch

There are similar versions of this drink around. Similar, but not nearly as good. You may have heard them called a Bahama Mama, Rum Runner or The Bucket. It’s famous in my family as “that thing Lizzy makes that’s sooooo good and totally full of alcohol”. Lizzy is my baby sister Elizabeth. She’s a bartender and she made up this drink. She loves pirates, mostly the Johnny Depp variety. Especially when he says “Elizabeth”. So, she named it Pirate’s Punch. It’ll make you walk and talk just like Depp’s “Jack Sparrow“. Ahem. Sorry. Captain Jack Sparrow.

Long Island Iced Tea

I’ve never really understood the concept of not mixing your liquor. I hear it all the time. It goes something like this. “Oh, I can’t have a Cosmo because I’ve been drinking Mai Tais all night. I don’t want to mix my drinks.” Tangent…I just realized my cosmopolitan recipe isn’t posted on this blog. Horrors! Must fix that soon! Back to the Long Island. It slaps you upside the head and says “Just throw it all in there!”. This bar staple has five different kinds of alcohol. Talk about mixing drinks! Pretty much the only thing it DOESN’T have is tea!

Superman

If you’ve been looking for a drink that will make you feel like a superhero, this is it. A drink to make you think you can leap tall buildings in a single bound (or at least lawn furniture). You’ll be partying at speeds faster than a speeding bullet and do push ups to show you’re more powerful than a locomotive.

Perfect Margarita On The Rocks

There’s a tradition in my family. When someone is getting married, a certain uncle of mine brings the bar. In his Ford Explorer. I’ve enjoyed several “dry” weddings hanging out in the parking lot with him pouring various beverages to help the party be a little more festive. Actually, this uncle brought his mobile bar to my wedding. I was just a baby and not of drinking age, so there wasn’t alcohol provided. Nobody told me the bar was there. I found out few months later from my friends that they had a grand old-time with “some guy in an Explorer who had a full wet bar on the tailgate”. I made sure to check the parking lot at the next family wedding and lo-and-behold, found the party car.

Now, there are some drinks that will not work delivered from a parking lot bar. One of them is a blended margarita. I mean, how would that possibly happen right? But what flows beautifully is lime soaked tequila with hints of orange and brandy over ice. Mix up all the alcohol and put it in a sealed container. Then simply shake, squeeze a lime and pour over ice. I happen to know that bartending is totally doable in the backseat of a Camry too. So don’t worry if you drive something other than an SUV. If you have no excuse to bring a bar to a wedding, you can always make a batch of these for tailgating, a BBQ, poker night or just a Friday (or Tuesday). They are perfection. Enjoy!

Perfect Margarita On The Rocks

2 cups sweet and sour mix
1 cup triple sec
1 1/2 cups gold tequila
1/3 cup brandy-based orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier®)
2 limes, quartered

Directions

  1. Salt the rims of 8 glasses. To do so, pour salt onto a small plate, rub the rims of the glasses with lime, and press them into the salt. Fill the glasses with ice.
  2. Combine sweet and sour mix, triple sec, tequila and Grand Marnier in a large pitcher. Stir or shake until smooth. Fill glasses with ice and squeeze a quarter lime into each glass, fill with margarita mixture and serve.

Freckled Cosmo

I found a new offering from Ocean Spray in the juice aisle the other day and decided immediately that I needed to make a cocktail out of it. The reason I was so drawn to white cranberry & strawberry juice can only be explained by my strong resemblance to the beverage. White cranberries have a pale pinkish hue. Fairer than their deep red cousins and strawberries are freckled. Pale & freckles? Yup. That’s me. Except white cranberries are sweeter than regular ones. I guess the resemblance had to end somewhere.

I decided to tweak my standard cosmopolitan recipe just a bit to create a freckled version that tastes kind of like a grown up strawberry lemonade – with a tart(ish) cranberry kick. And no lemon. But it has that summery kind of vibe to it. Delicious! If you can’t find the white cran/strawberry juice just use regular cranberry juice and muddle a couple of strawberries in when you shake it up. You won’t get the pretty light pink, but the flavor will be close.

Freckled Cosmo
a Bakerlady original
makes 2 cocktails

4 ounces vodka
2 ounces Cointreau (you can also use triple sec)
The juice of one lime (about 1 1/2 oz)
4 ounces white cranberry/strawberry juice
Fresh strawberries (optional)

Combine all ingredients (including the rinds of the lime after juicing) in a large shaker filled 3/4 the way with ice. Shake vigorously about 30 times. Pour into chilled martini glasses and garnish with fresh strawberries.
